I am NOT a hypochondriac!

Do you remember the Seinfeld episode when Elaine thinks she has rabies?  “Oh oh, listen to this, this is not good, listen to these symptoms for rabies: anxiety, irritability. I got those, I’m irritable!”  Just by reading the symptoms, she starts to believe it’s describing her…trouble swallowing, headache, etc.  I remember when I was going to school for psychology, all of my professors advised us NOT to go through the DSM IV and diagnose ourselves.  Reading through the criteria for the different disorders could be a dangerous thing…some of my classmates believed that they had Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, while others thought they were borderline schizophrenic!  I admit, I’ll read up on disorders or various diagnoses (physical, emotional, or mental) and there have been times when I’ve said, “I swear that’s me!!!”  I once had a long list of symptoms, but none of them were connected to any one diagnosis…or so I thought.

Last summer, my cousin told me about Candida Albicans (or just Candida).  I had heard the word mentioned before, but never really knew what it was.   It’s a result of an overproduction of yeast in your body.  My first thought was, yeast?  I don’t have that…but as I read more about the condition, it was as if a light was finally turned on!

Here are some of the symptoms:

  • abdominal gas and bloating
  • headaches
  • migraines
  • excessive fatigue
  • cravings for alcohol
  • anxiety
  • vaginitis
  • cravings for sweets
  • inability to think clearly or concentrate
  • hyperactivity
  • mood swings
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • hyperactivity
  • itching
  • acne
  • eczema
  • depression
  • sinus inflammation
  • pre-menstrual syndrome
  • dizziness
  • poor memory
  • persistent cough
  • earaches
  • low sex drive
  • muscle weakness
  • irritability
  • learning difficulties
  • sensitivity to fragrances and/or other chemicals
  • cognitive impairment
  • thrush
  • athlete’s foot
  • sore throat
  • indigestion
  • acid reflux
  • chronic pain

While I didn’t have all of the symptoms, all of MY symptoms were on the list.  So what does one do to overcome this condition?  Change their diet!!  There are numerous websites that list the good and bad foods for the diet, but what it comes down to is a mostly raw diet…eliminating sugar, yeasty & moldy foods (cheese, mushrooms*, alcohol) and starches.  When I stick to the “diet”, my symptoms disappear!  No more chronic fatigue, bloating, my skin clears up and so much more.  I once was allergic to pineapple, bananas, and tomatoes….but after following this diet and doing a small cleanse, I’ve been able to eat those foods again…after four years, I almost forgot what they tasted like!

*As far as mushrooms go, reishi, maitake, and shitake mushrooms are good to eat while following the candida diet.

Everyone has Candida, but not everyone has an overgrowth of Candida.  Your lifestyle can lead to an overgrowth…stress, a diet high in sugar, taking antibiotics, and drinking alcoholic beverages.  I never got diagnosed by a doctor, but I think that the proof is in the results.  To think that all of the medications that I was prescribed just fed into the Candida problem.  I highly recommend that if anyone wants to learn more about Candida, check out some of these websites:
