RECIPE: Raw Mochaccino

If you’re looking for a healthy coffee substitute, look no further! This drink is fruit sweetened and loaded with superfoods that provide a natural energy boost while satisfying your craving. The shilajit, maca, and mesquite give it an earthy, coffee-like flavor, but without the caffeine buzz!

RECIPE: Raw Mochaccino

While in college, my favorite drink from Starbucks was their  Mocha Frappuccino. And I always went big…no “tall” size for me. Back then I was also consuming dairy, so we’re looking at a “grande” or “venti” size with whole milk and whipped cream. Looking at the nutrition facts today scare me!

So skip the dairy, refined sugar, gums and high fat…I’ve got a much healthier version for you!

RAW MOCHACCINO: {vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, oil-free, refined sugar-free}

Serves 2

What you need:

  • 2 cups of raw hazelnut milk* (or your choice of milk)
  • 1.5 Tbsp lucuma
  • 1.5 – 2 Tbsp raw cacao powder
  • 1 Tbsp maca
  • 1 Tbsp mesquite
  • 2-3 pitted Medjool dates (or 1 Tbsp pure maple syrup)
  • 3/4-1  tsp shilajit
  • 2+ cups of frozen milk cubes or ice cubes (opt)
  • raw chocolate sauce

For an added superfoods boost, add in 1/4 tsp of reishi mushroom powder!

For the ice cubes, I just froze a tray of raw hazelnut milk for a creamier treat, but regular ice cubes will work too!

How To:

  1. Blend all of the ingredients (except ice) until smooth.
  2. Add ice and blend to desired consistency…adding more ice if necessary.
  3. Drizzle two glasses with chocolate sauce, fill with Mochaccino, top with extra chocolate sauce (optional).

You can also pour the Mochaccino over ice instead of blending the ice…it all comes down to preference.

For the chocolate sauce, I whisked 1 Tbsp raw cacao powder, 2 Tbsp coconut nectar (or maple syrup) and a splash of milk.

You can replace the cacao with carob, but it will alter the flavor.

RECIPE: Raw Mochaccino

*Making raw hazelnut milk is super simple!  All you need is a Vita Mix or high-speed blender. Soak one cup of raw hazelnuts overnight; drain, rinse. Then add to your blender with 3.5-4 cups of cold filtered water. Blend until smooth and strain through a nut milk bag or a cheesecloth could work. You can save the pulp to make raw granola or cookies.  If you’re looking for a sweeter “milk” you can blend with a couple dates or sweetener of your choice.

Oh, yay! If I’m in a pinch I’ll grab the maca and/or cacao from Whole Foods or Natural Grocers, but I tend to do most of my shopping for these ingredients online…I’ll shop around for the best price or sales through Amazon, Vitacost, The Raw Food World or Ultimate Superfoods.
Please let me know if you give it a try! ❤
